Pondering questions or just sharing opinions, a cynic is never short on either.

Rich's Ramblings #2

"Sour Grapes"or "it's what you know for sure....."

It took me a while to think about this one but i had some time to reflect on the things i am wanting to say here. As many know i used to import the cmb car engine line as well as do almost all R&D for the car engines. After many revisions and screaming matches with the factory there were only small things left to change but Mauro had reached his breaking point and refused to make the final revision which would have yielded a superior and fundamentally sound race engine. Many revisions I demanded from the factory  were due to verbal complaints from customers and "experts" while other revisions truly made the engines better. Its these customer and expert "this engine must have ....... or it is shit" items that have long pissed me off and i should have ignored them because THEY were wrong and it cost me the friendship with Mauro Braghieri from CMB. So here are some of the things that came up at the time and i will quote what was said to me with the answer i will give today: "What?, these engines do not have a bronze bushing at the upper con rod end like all other engines, this is shit, i dont want it".- To wich i have to say today. Hey asshole, today this is the hot ADD ON from JP Racing and it costs extra on a Nova Rossi. Here is another: " Turbo plugs and headbuttons are unacceptable for offroad engines, it makes them stall, this is shit, i don't want it". My answer should have been: Learn how to tune, beacuse Everybody will be switching to them; yes, even the allmighty Nova Rossi engines will have them from the factory. Another expert opinion was: "There are no cutaway areas on top of the rear cover for the transfer ports (and yes),this is shit, i don't want it". My answer today: Guess what, all the newest creations of the so called top manufacturers are going to the "full cover" rear housing, i suppose if Mario Rossi says its OK it must be the finality of truth. And last but not least: "The carb boot leaks some fuel (again, everybody-in chorus), this is shit, i don't want it" My answer today: Hey, even the "perfect" "....uh, its so good, i want It to put it's dick in me..."-beloved OS Engines leak fuel out of the carb boot; so put a zip tie on it and shut the fuck up. The list goes on, but i feel better and these days i make better use of my time and go racing with my friends rather than listen to the "experts" opinions.

PS: I just cracked the case on my beloved OS, damn! No problem, buddy of mine had a spare case from one that ate the crank pin early.............hmmm?!!! And the beat goes on.......

BTW: Many of  the "OLD" features that were unacceptable in the past are now available in the Nova Rossi 367, awesome engine i should mention,...no, really it is.

Good Racing,

Rich's Ramblings #1

or "who the hell is Rich Reid and what does he know?"

Fair enough of a question, i suppose. Nobody can claim to know absolutely everything that is to know about R/C engines although i have met two individuals that come pretty close. To some of us the internal workings of these little marvels is a larger part of the R/C hobby than the actual racing and being able to masterfully control the R/C car. Over the past 30 years, i started in R/C racing at age 13, I have met many great engine tuners and engineers that share the same core interests;- how to build and modify R/C model engines for increased performance. Most of them have become good friends over the years, here in the US as well as Europe.

Why modify a perfectly good engine? Because you can and there is always a better way to do things. Besides, there are things that are not done in massproduction due to time-, machining- and cost limits.

Every "Tuner" makes his own claims and does the work he does to gain a performance edge over the next guy at the races - That's why we race, to compete and hopefully triumph when the checkered flag waves.

Like I stated in my intro on the News Page, if you are looking for shiny parts, nonsense fictional statements like "55000 rpms" or +1.5hp over the manufacturers claimed output which in itself is pure speculation, then you are in the wrong place.

But if you are looking for real performance, know how and workmanship; then Reid R/C Performance is for you.

Good Racing,
